Advisee Spotlight: Savannah Dever

For many first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) students, mapping out a career pathway in high school can feel like a daunting task. For CareerSpring Advisee Savannah Dever, this task felt a bit less daunting after being introduced to our Career Platform through our Community Partner EMERGE. “I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do professionally, so tools like the Career Interest Finder really gave me the guidance I needed,” Savannah shared.
She navigated through the resources of our high school experience to help gauge her interests, but it wasn’t until her first semester at Bryn Mawr College, far from home in Houston, that she began to understand the true value of our resources. With newfound clarity and appreciation, she applied for our CareerSpring FORWARD Internship Program. After interviewing, Savannah successfully secured a spot in the program and was placed as an Intern as a part of our Data Science/IT cohort at our Employer Partner EDF Trading North America.

Savannah was able to put all her lessons from our Career Platform into practice,
“...one major takeaway I learned from my time as a FORWARD Intern was the importance of networking and forming meaningful connections with those around me to build my social network. I had no prior background in data science, so the hands-on experience gained through the internship helped me discover my newfound interest in the data industry and equipped me with the tools needed to jumpstart my career in data!”
In balancing huge life shifts, such as moving across state lines to attend college, CareerSpring’s resources provided a consistent and accessible source of support for Savannah to jumpstart her career journey. Savannah pays it forward in her role as CareerSpring Ambassador both on the Bryn Mawr College campus and with EMERGE as an alumni. She says, “My goal is to reach as many of my peers who haven’t heard of CareerSpring yet, so they know that they have a community and support system ready to help them succeed in the work force post-college!”
Our CareerSpring FORWARD Program takes place after a student’s first or second year of college, focusing on preparing them with both soft skills and industry-specific skills needed to succeed in their chosen field. Savannah’s ambition and drive was given an outlet, but now in her sophomore year, she has a competitive edge when it comes to applying for future opportunities.
