Opening Doors: CareerSpring Advisees Spend a Day at Ally Financial
For many CareerSpring Advisees, getting to know a company means more than reading a job description or attending an information session. It means seeing the workplace firsthand, meeting the people behind the organization, asking questions, and beginning to picture what a career there could look like.
Over the summer, CareerSpring Advisees had the opportunity to do just that when Ally Financial welcomed them to its Detroit headquarters for A Day at Ally Financial. Hosted in partnership with Employer Sponsor Ally Financial, the morning gave our Advisees an inside look at their culture, career opportunities, and the people who make the company what it is. The experience included conversations with Ally leaders, a guided tour of the headquarters led by current CareerSpring Advisees interning at Ally, a professional development workshop on navigating skills-based hiring, and time to connect with local professionals and fellow Advisees over lunch.
Brenda Rios, Director of Auto Marketing at Ally, shared:
“I truly enjoyed meeting the CareerSpring students and giving them a glimpse into Ally – both our culture and the work we do every day. It was rewarding to share more about my role and explain how I help support our auto dealer customers. Having the students onsite brought those conversations to life in a way that's difficult to duplicate virtually. Their visit was a great reminder of the value of building connections in person, especially at a time when so much of our interaction happens online.”
The opportunity to step inside Ally’s headquarters gave Advisees access to hear directly from professionals about their career journeys, learn more about the work happening across the company, and ask questions about what it takes to launch a career in financial services. Exposure to professionals and workplaces can help Advisees build not only knowledge about potential career paths, but also the confidence to pursue them.
For Advisee Alonzo Wilson, the experience offered a chance to see himself at Ally, sharing that: “During my time at the Ally Financial office visit I felt a deep sense of belonging and was immensely welcomed. Talking to representatives helped me learn that Ally is a place that I could see myself at, especially with the amazing benefits that they have.”
The day also gave Advisees practical tools they could carry into their own career journeys. Through the professional development workshop, participants explored navigating skills-based hiring and how to position themselves effectively in today’s talent market. For Advisee Marlen Toma, the experience provided concrete guidance as she prepares for recruitment. She shared, “The session set a strong foundation for my recruitment prep, highlighting exactly which areas of my resume and interviewing strategy to focus on. It was a wonderful experience that truly showcased Ally’s supportive environment and culture, making me extremely interested in their internship program.”
A Day at Ally Financial is one example of what can happen when an employer chooses to engage directly with CareerSpring Advisees. Employer Partners can help expand career access in many ways—from welcoming Advisees into their workplaces and sharing career insights to engaging employees as Advisors and volunteers, and connecting Advisees with meaningful career opportunities.
We’re grateful to Ally Financial for opening its doors and creating space for Advisees to learn, connect, and envision what could be next.
